Helicobacter Pylori Test (Blood)

Helicobacter Pylori Test – H pylori infection is the chronic inflammation of the stomach and the duodenum caused by the H pylori bacteria. This H pylori bacteria can stay inactive in the stomach for a long time before causing sores or ulcers.

Symptoms of H pylori Infection

The most common H pylori symptoms are;

• Belching
• Bloating
• Nausea and vomiting
• Abdominal Discomfort

Serious H pylori infection can show the following symptoms;

Clinical definition of helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped, gram-negative bacillus that has been associated with gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastric malignancies. Infection by the bacteria causes the inflammation of the stomach lining and the development of chronic duodenal, peptic and gastric ulcers, active gastritis, stomach cancer, and other inflammatory gastroduodenal lesions.

Four tests may be most commonly used to detect H. pylori:

• antibody test – To check for IgG & IgA antibodies against the bacteria.
• Urea breath test – To detect and identify the bacteria in the stomach by checking for the urease produced by it.
• Stomach biopsy – tissue examination of the stomach lining and small intestine
• stool antigen test

Why blood, H. Pylori test advised?

The Helicobacter pylori test asses infection by the bacteria. It may be done to detect reasons for gastritis or peptic ulcers and monitor the treatment of the infection.

Symptoms are not mandatory in the patient, but there could be possibilities for signs like

• Mild nausea
• Anemia
• Difficulty swallowing
• Abdominal pain
• Bloating and fullness
• Indigestion
• Vomiting
• Hungry feeling 1 to 3 after eating
• Gastrointestinal bleeding
• Unexplained weight loss

H pylori test (blood) is used for diagnosing an infection caused by the H pylori bacteria and also to check for the effectiveness of the H pylori treatment. The various methods adopted for the H pylori test are blood test, breath test, and stool test.

Both breath and stool are said to be more effective in the detection of H pylori infection than a blood test.
