Urine Sample Collection Procedure

Here is some information on the sample collection procedure for a urine culture and sensitivity test:

• The urine sample should be collected using the 'midstream clean catch' method.
• Start by washing your hands with soap and water to avoid contamination.
• For females, use a cleansing wipe or soap and water to clean the labia and vaginal area. For males, wipe the tip of the penis with a cleansing wipe or soap and water.
• Begin urinating into the toilet and let some urine pass first before collecting the sample. This clears any bacteria from the urethra, so the sample is pure.
• Hold the sterile collection cup in the urine stream and catch approximately 10-20mL of urine in the cup. Try not to touch the rim of the cup.
• Finish urinating into the toilet.
• Screw the lid tightly onto the collection cup. Make sure it is properly sealed.
• Label the cup with your name, date of birth, date and time of collection.
• Keep the sample refrigerated until it can be transported to the lab within 2 hours of collection. The lab should receive the sample within 24 hours.
• Be sure to complete any lab requisition form with clinical details about symptoms or prior antibiotic use.
