Troponin I Test (Trop I Test)

The Trop I test measures levels of troponin I proteins in the bloodstream. Troponin I and T are regulatory proteins released when heart muscle cells are injured, such as during a heart attack. As troponin has high sensitivity and specificity for cardiac muscle damage, it is one of the preferred biomarkers tested in emergency rooms to rapidly diagnose a myocardial infarction when someone has chest pain or other heart attack symptoms.

Higher than normal troponin I level in the blood indicate damage to the heart muscle as a result of reduced oxygen delivery. This often occurs when a coronary artery gets blocked, preventing sufficient blood flow to sections of the heart. The damaged heart muscle then leaks detectable amounts of troponin into the blood. Levels begin to rise within 3–12 hours of the initial heart attack and remain elevated for up to two weeks.

The Troponin I test requires a blood sample collected by inserting a small needle into a vein in your arm. The blood gets tested using advanced immunoassay methods to quantify the level of cardiac troponin I present. Results are available within an hour.
