When available, the Trichomoniasis Test detects Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite responsible for a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). What is the Trichomoniasis Test?

The Trichomoniasis Test identifies Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite that causes trichomoniasis, an STI that can lead to vaginal discharge, itching, or discomfort in women, and mild symptoms in men. Specimen Required

The test requires one of the following specimens, collected by a healthcare professional or at a certified lab:

• Urine Sample: A first-morning urine sample is preferred for higher accuracy.
• Vaginal Swab: A swab from the vaginal wall, typically collected by a healthcare provider for women.

How the Test is Performed?

When available, the Trichomoniasis Test is conducted as follows;

• Sample Collection: A urine sample or vaginal swab is collected under sterile conditions, either at a lab or via home collection (for orders above ₹1001 in select Pune areas)
• Laboratory Analysis: The sample is processed by NABL-certified external labs using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), such as PCR, which detect Trichomonas vaginalis DNA with high sensitivity
• Result Delivery: Results are securely delivered within 6–72 hours via email or WhatsApp, in accordance with our Privacy Policy and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

Why is the Trichomoniasis Test Done?

The test is used to

• Confirm the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis in symptomatic individuals (e.g., vaginal discharge, itching, or pelvic discomfort in women; urethral discharge in men)
• Screen asymptomatic individuals at risk of STIs, such as those with multiple sexual partners or a history of unprotected sex
• Assist healthcare providers in treatment planning, as trichomoniasis is treatable with antibiotics.

When Should the Test Be Done?

Consider the Trichomoniasis Test when advised by a healthcare provider, especially if:

• You experience symptoms like abnormal vaginal discharge, genital itching, or discomfort during urination or sex.
• You or your partner have been diagnosed with an STI or are at risk due to unprotected sex.
• You are pregnant, as untreated trichomoniasis may increase the risk of preterm delivery.
• You are part of routine STI screening, particularly for high-risk groups.
