RBC Folate Test

RBC Folate Test is a blood test that measures the amount of folate in the red blood cells (RBCs). Folate, also known as folic acid or vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the growth and development of cells and tissues in the body, particularly during periods of rapid cell division and growth, such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate plays a key role in the production of DNA and RNA, as well as in the metabolism of amino acids.

The RBC folate test is used to evaluate folate status in the body. Folate deficiency can lead to a variety of health problems, including anemia, birth defects, and an increased risk of certain cancers. The test is often used in pregnant women to assess their risk of having a baby with neural tube defects, as well as in individuals with malabsorption syndromes, chronic alcoholism, or other conditions that can lead to folate deficiency.

During the test, a sample of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are typically reported as the amount of folate present in the red blood cells, measured in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL) or nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). Normal values for RBC folate levels vary depending on age, gender, and other factors, and can range from 140 to 628 ng/mL (317 to 1422 nmol/L).
