Non HDL Cholesterol Test

Non-HDL (non-high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol test is a blood test that measures the level of cholesterol carried by all lipoproteins except HDL cholesterol. This includes LDL (low-density lipoprotein), VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein), and IDL (intermediate-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

Non-HDL cholesterol is considered a more comprehensive measure of a person's overall cholesterol levels than just measuring LDL cholesterol alone. This is because non-HDL cholesterol reflects the total amount of cholesterol carried by all lipoproteins that contribute to the formation of plaques in arteries.

Non-HDL cholesterol levels of less than 130 milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) are considered optimal for most people. However, people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes or a history of heart disease may need to aim for lower levels.

If your non-HDL cholesterol levels are too high, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as exercise, a healthy diet, and weight loss, as well as medications to help lower your non-HDL cholesterol levels.
