Autoimmune Tests
Autoimmune tests are used to diagnose autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune disorders are those disorders that occur when the body’s immune system attacks different organs, cells, tissues, or the entire body.
The immune system does not recognize the cells as one of its own and creates antibodies that attack the cells. Autoimmune testing is necessary to see if the person has an organ-specific autoimmune disease or generalized autoimmune disease.
Autoimmune Tests Panel
Autoimmune disorders fall into two general types: those that damage many organs (systemic autoimmune diseases) and those where only a single organ or tissue is directly damaged by the autoimmune process (localized). There are 80-100 diseases that occur because of autoimmune responses, and researchers suspect at least 40 additional diseases have an autoimmune basis.
One blood test for autoimmune disease is C-reactive protein (CRP). Another test is ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) – this is done to assess an inflammation that is not from an infection or because of other reasons. One of the most common blood tests for detecting autoimmune disorders is ANA (antinuclear antibodies). This is also known as an ANF (anti-nuclear factor).
Autoimmune Tests List
There are three tests usually cover in an initial autoimmune test panel list;
- C-reactive protein (CRP)
- ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
- ANA (antinuclear antibodies)
Autoimmune Test ANA
Autoimmune disorders usually affect many systems, therefore the symptoms are varied in every case. Patients suffering from recurrent joint pains, skin rash, psoriatic lesions, excessive dryness of eyes, swelling, deformity, and reddish discolouration of joints are some symptoms suggestive of autoimmune disorders. These symptoms could be present individually or in combination with one another.
Most of the times these symptoms do not subside with medication, which makes the physician think of autoimmune disorders as the probable diagnosis. Such cases can be diagnosed with the help of the ANA test.
Systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, are some disorders that can be diagnosed by performing ANA test. Patients may also be required to undergo other tests like TPO test, X-ray, MRI scan, DEXA scan etc. along with ANA test.
Autoimmune Disease
Patients suffering from any such disorders will have antibodies that harm their own body tissues. In normal cases, antibodies are synthesized by the immune system in order to protect the body from any foreign toxic influences. However, if anti-nuclear antibodies are formed by the immune system, they will try to attack the core proteins of every cell in the patient’s body.
