What is Thyroglobulin?
Thyroglobulin Test – Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a kind of glycoprotein homodimer primarily produced by the thyroid gland of our body. This basically acts as a substrate, aiding the synthesis of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. It also helps the storage of the iodine and thyroid hormone in inactive forms. The hormone is secreted from the endoplasmic reticulum, and subsequently to the thyroxine biosynthesis, in the follicular lumen of the body.
Mutation in these genes causes thyroid dyshormonogenesis, which is manifested as goiter and is related to moderate to severe congenital hypothyroidism.
Symptoms of high thyroglobulin antibody in blood
- fatigue
- unexplained weight gain
- constipation
- dry skin
- goiter
Thyroglobulin Antibody Test
Thyroglobulin is a hormone that is produced by all individuals, and normally its concentration in blood is quite low. Thyroglobulin concentration increases in both benign and malignant conditions. So, it is an indicator of any thyroid dysfunction and an indicator of a tumor, which is a parameter used to constantly monitor patients with thyroid papillary and follicular cancer after its diagnosis.
Why do the thyroglobulin test advise?
The thyroglobulin levels monitor the treatment of thyroid cancer and detect its recurrence. The thyroglobulin test also helps determine the cause of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
The thyroglobulin levels are checked before and after the completion of treatment for thyroid cancer, radioactive iodine therapy, and ideally at regular intervals. It is sometimes paired with other thyroid tests to test for certain disorders.
Thyroglobulin test results
If your result is negative, that means your thyroglobulin level in blood is normal. This shows that means no anti thyroglobulin antibodies are there in your blood sample. However, if you have small amounts of it in your blood, it may be a sign of the following health problems:
- thyroid cancer
- diabetes type 1
- a drastic decrease in the number of red blood cells in the body (pernicious anemia) caused because of the deficiency of multi-vitamins
- some collagen vascular disease
If the level of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in your blood is quite high, it may show some serious autoimmune disorder, as serious as Graves’ disease or Hashimoto thyroiditis.
