NCV Test

The NCV test, or Nerve Conduction Velocity test, is a neurological diagnostic procedure that measures how fast electrical signals travel through your peripheral nerves, which are the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord. It is commonly used to assess nerve damage or dysfunction.

During the test, small electrodes are placed on the skin overlying a nerve, and mild electrical impulses are applied. The speed and strength of the electrical signals as they travel from one electrode to another are recorded and analysed. Healthy nerves transmit signals faster and more efficiently than damaged ones.

Why the NCV Test is used?

The NCV test is often used to diagnose or evaluate conditions such as

• Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage, often due to diabetes or other causes)
• Carpal tunnel syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome
• Nerve injuries from trauma or compression
• Muscle and neuromuscular disorders

This test is often performed alongside electromyography (EMG), which measures electrical activity in muscles, to provide a comprehensive picture of nerve and muscle health. The NCV is generally safe, with minimal risks and only mild discomfort or a sensation of a light shock during the testing.
