Haptoglobin Test

The haptoglobin test is a blood test that measures the level of haptoglobin in the blood. Haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver that binds free haemoglobin released from red blood cells. This test is primarily used to help diagnose and monitor conditions related to haemolysis (the destruction of red blood cells) and to assess liver function.

Indications for the Test

The haptoglobin test may be ordered in the following situations:

1. Hemolytic Anemia: To determine if hemolysis is occurring, which can lead to anemia.
2. Liver Disease: To assess liver function, as haptoglobin levels can be affected by liver health.
3. Monitoring Conditions: To monitor patients with known hemolytic disorders or liver disease.

Interpretation of Results

• Low Haptoglobin Levels: This may indicate hemolysis, as the haptoglobin is used up binding free hemoglobin. Conditions such as hemolytic anemia, sickle cell disease, or transfusion reactions can lead to low levels.
• Normal or High Haptoglobin Levels: This may suggest that hemolysis is not occurring. However, high levels can also be seen in inflammatory conditions or liver disease.

Additional Considerations

• The haptoglobin test is often performed alongside other tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC), reticulocyte count, and bilirubin levels, to provide a comprehensive view of a patient's hematologic status.
• Factors such as recent blood transfusions, certain medications, and underlying health conditions can affect haptoglobin levels.
