FNAC Test (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology)

The FNAC or Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology test is a simple, minimally invasive diagnostic procedure used to investigate abnormal lumps or masses. It can effectively distinguish between benign, malignant or inflammatory lesions without surgery in many cases.

In this test, a very thin, hollow needle is inserted into the suspicious lump or mass while checking via ultrasound imaging. Cells and tissue fluid are then extracted in a gentle suction process into a syringe and smeared onto slides for examination under a microscope by a cytopathologist.

As an outpatient procedure taking less than 10 minutes, FNAC provides rapid on-site assessment of cellular morphology to differentiate infections, benign tumours or malignant cancers. Key body sites evaluated include the thyroid, lymph nodes, breast, lungs, liver and other organs when a concerning mass is discovered on examination or imaging. Additional tests may follow if inflammation or malignancy cannot be excluded based on FNAC results.

Is the FNAC procedure painful?

The fine needle insertion causes only mild discomfort comparable to a blood draw for a few seconds when numbing medication is used. This allows good tissue sampling necessary for accurate results.

When is FNAC recommended?

1. To evaluate breast lumps, thyroid nodules, swollen lymph nodes or masses in organs like liver, lungs etc to differentiate between cystic, inflammatory and neoplastic aetiology.
2. To obtain tissue samples when imaging tests are equivocal regarding benign or malignant status of a concerning mass found in the body.
3. To identify spread of cancers to lymph nodes or other sites through microscopic examination of cell morphology and properties.
