Description

Lithium Test

Lithium test analyses the quantities of lithium found in the blood in order to find out whether drug concentrations are in the therapeutic range or need moderation and alterations. It is normally ordered whilst monitoring the treatment of a bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorders are a mental condition that is characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania.

Lithium is used as a mood-stabilizing drug. Upon ingestion, lithium interacts with various neurotransmitters and receptors, lowering the secretion of norepinephrine and increasing serotonin synthesis. Lithium quantities are assessed as blood levels must be maintained within a narrow therapeutic range. Excess of lithium leads to lithium toxicity and develops symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, confusion, tremors, and insufficient amounts. The medications might not be effective.

Why lithium test is advised?

A Lithium test is normally prescribed for the assessment of lithium levels in the blood. It helps treat mania (high mood with over-reactivity, racing thoughts, and agitation), to help prevent the recurrence of severe mood swings post-acute episode of bipolar illness, and to boost the effectiveness of antidepressants.

Symptoms known to be commonly observed in such scenarios are:

  • Depression
  • Racing thoughts
  • Agitation
  • Severe mood swings. The mood is excessively high on some occasions and very low on others.
  • Irritable
  • High energy and grandiose ideas

Your doctor may also order tests that check how well your kidneys and other organs are working. This is because lithium is excreted through your kidneys. It is not metabolized. These tests may include;

  • Creatinine
  • Calcium
  • Complete blood count
  • Thyroid function
  • Electrocardiogram
  • BUN
  • Creatinine
  • Urinalysis
  • Thyroid function
What might affect the lithium test result?

Timing is important. Having the test 12 hours after your last dose of lithium gives the best results. Certain medicines can affect your results. These include;

  • Antibiotics
  • Arthritis medicines
  • Dilantin, for epilepsy
  • Water pills (diuretics)
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, except aspirin
  • Cardiovascular medicines. These include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.
  • Being dehydrated or on a diet too high or low in salt can also affect your results.
