Lithium test analyses the quantities of lithium found in the blood in order to find out whether drug concentrations are in the therapeutic range or need moderation and alterations. It is normally ordered whilst monitoring the treatment of a bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorders are a mental condition that is characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania.

Lithium is used as a mood-stabilizing drug. Upon ingestion, lithium interacts with various neurotransmitters and receptors, lowering the secretion of norepinephrine and increasing serotonin synthesis. Lithium quantities are assessed as blood levels must be maintained within a narrow therapeutic range. Excess of lithium leads to lithium toxicity and develops symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, confusion, tremors, and insufficient amounts. The medications might not be effective.

What might affect the lithium test result?

Timing is important. Having the test 12 hours after your last dose of lithium gives the best results. Certain medicines can affect your results. These include;

• Antibiotics
• Arthritis medicines
• Dilantin, for epilepsy
• Water pills (diuretics)
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, except aspirin
• Cardiovascular medicines. These include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.
• Being dehydrated or on a diet too high or low in salt can also affect your results.
