In places where a distance of two meters cannot be maintained, a medical mask is required. At hospitals or people catering to the patients, a medical mask is a must.

Medical Face Mask

Medical masks are also known as surgical masks. According to WHO, they need to be worn by;

  • Health care workers
  • People who have COVID-19 symptoms
  • Those who are taking care of someone suspected or confirmed with COVID-19.

In areas where COVID-19 is widespread, and physical distancing of at least one meter cannot be achieved, medical masks should be worn by

  • People who are aged 60 years or older
  • Those who have underlying health conditions

Fabric Face Mask

These face masks are also known as non-medical masks. They should be worn by.

  • People who have no COVID-19 symptoms
  • Where COVID-19 is widespread
  • The physical distancing of at least one meter cannot be achieved
  • People who are in close contact with others, such as social workers, cashiers, and servers.
  • Fabric face masks must also be considered in busy settings like when traveling in public transport like buses, shared taxis, and trains, in workplaces, in grocery stores and other crowded environments, mentions the video shared by WHO.

Which Face Mask is the Best?

Guidelines to follow for wearing mask;

  • The mask should fit you properly. It should cover your nose, mouth, and chin.
  • The mask should neither be too loose nor too tight. It should be breathable.
  • Avoid touching the outer surface of the mask when outside.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub, before wearing the mask.
  • Discard a single-use medical mask into a closed bin.
  • Wash fabric face mask with warm water and soap after single-time use.
  • The fabric face mask should not be wet or dirty. 

WHO’s New Guidelines for Wearing Face Masks

An effective face mask can be made at home. It should cover your nose, mouth, and chin and should be comfortable to wear. A face mask that is too tight or too loose and is breathable, otherwise you will end up touching it frequently. This will ultimately nullify the purpose of wearing a face mask.

  • Wash your hands before touching the face masks.
  • If you are buying a mask from outside, make sure you inspect the mask for tears and holes.
  • Look for the topside, where the metal piece or stiff edge is. This side should be over your nose.
  • Make sure that the coloured side of the mask faces outwards.
  • Adjust the mask to your face without leaving gaps on the sides.
  • Avoid touching the mask when you are outside. Once you are outside, the outside surface of the mask needs to be contaminated.
  • When you are back home, discard the single-use masks. Remove the mask from behind the ears or head. Keep the mask away from you and surfaces while removing it.
  • Discard the mask immediately after use, preferably into a closed bin.
  • After discarding the mask, wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds.
  • Do not use a ripped or damp mask.
  • Do not wear a mask in a way that it only covers either your mouth or nose. The mask should cover both properly.
  • As mentioned above, the mask should fit your face properly and should neither be too tight nor too loose.
  • Avoid touching the front of the mask. Avoid touching the mask for talking to people and avoid activities that would require touching the mask.
  • After using the mask, discard it properly and do not leave it within the reach of others. Do not reuse the mask.
