What is the Respiratory Tract Infection (RTIs)?

Last updated on October 20th, 2022 at 07:57 am

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are infections of parts of the body involved in breathing, such as the sinuses, throat, airways or lungs. Most Respiratory Tract Infection (RTIs) get better without treatment, but sometimes you may need to see a doctor. Respiratory tract infection is described as any infectious disease of the upper or lower respiratory tract.

Respiratory infections can be classified by the causative virus (e.g., influenza, Corona, parainfluenza, etc.), they are classified clinically according to syndrome such as the common cold, bronchiolitis, croup, pneumonia. Although specific pathogens commonly cause characteristic clinical manifestations, e.g., rhinovirus typically causes the common cold, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV typically causes bronchiolitis, each can cause many of the viral respiratory syndromes.

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) include the common cold, laryngitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute rhinitis, acute rhinosinusitis, and acute otitis media.

What is an Infection in Respiratory Tract?

The invasion of our organism’s tissues by disease-causing agents, most commonly viruses and/or bacteria.

What is Respiratory Tract Infection?

The disease that appears when the part of our body that is involved with the process of respiration (or, perhaps, a closely related structure) is invaded by certain pathologic agents, most commonly viruses or bacteria.

Two Parts of our Respiratory Tract

Our respiratory tract has two parts;

  • Upper Respiratory Tract
  • Lower Respiratory Tract

Respiratory tract infection can be an infection of the upper or lower respiratory tract. It is popularly known as RTI.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI)

It is the illness because of infection in the upper respiratory tract, including the nose, sinus, pharynx, or larynx. Upper Respiratory tract infection includes nasal obstruction, a sore throat, tonsillitis, and sinusitis.

Symptoms of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI)
  • Congestion in either of the nasal sinuses, sometimes associated with congestion in the lungs
  • Running nose, cough, sore throat
  • Difficult to breathe
  • Sneezing
  • Fever and headache

Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (LRTI)

It can affect the airways such as with acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis or the air sac at the end of the airways as in case of pneumonia (infection of the lungs alveoli). Lower Respiratory tract comprises Trachea, Primary Bronchi, Lungs.

Symptoms of Lower Respiratory Tract infection (LRTI)

How to Diagnose Respiratory Tract Infection (RTIs)?

  • Bronchitis: An infection of a lower airway.
  • Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection of lungs.

Lungs function test has been useful as a diagnostic tool. Pulse oximetry can check how much oxygen gets into the lungs. A doctor may also take a swab from your nose or mouth or ask you for a sample of sputum to check the type of virus or bacteria causing the disease.
