Description

Western Blot Test

Western Blot Test is used for the confirmatory medical diagnosis of various infectious diseases and, to name a few, HIV, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), hepatitis C (HCV), syphilis, and autoimmune disorders.

Western Blot Test Limitation

As per WHO guidelines, the Western Blot technique has been widely used as a more specific and supplemental assay on samples found initially reactive using ELISA and other screening tests for HIV. The Western Blot test is the confirmatory test to detect antibodies to HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus), the causative agent of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

HIV Testing is performed using a screening test; Rapid /ELISA and samples found reactive in these tests are confirmed for their status by Western blot.

How Western Blot Test is done?

The Western Blot is a test used to detect human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In the Western Blot Test, a blood sample was taken and separated with an electric current. It is then transferred to a piece of blotting paper. After this, an enzyme is added to it to cause colour changes, which shows HIV antibodies.

Western Blot Test is ordered for people exposed to HIV, such as those who indulge in unsafe sex, share needles, or have had blood transfusions, and those with any sexually transmitted diseases. It is a simple blood test that does not need any preparations. Western Blot Test is a highly successful method used to confirm positive results gained from other tests.
