Description

What is the serum folic acid test?

(Folate or Vitamin b9)

Folate (vitamin B9) is needed for a healthy liver, skin, hair, and eyes. If you’re deficient, it can cause tiredness, pins and needles, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and muscle weakness.

Folate, also called vitamin B9, or folic acid, is a type of B vitamin. Folic acid is the synthetic version of vitamin B9, which is what’s found in fortified foods and supplements. Folate is needed for a healthy liver, skin, hair, and eyes.

Folate plays a key role in forming red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body. It also plays an important role in making and repairing your DNA.

For pregnant women, folate is essential for the development of a baby’s brain and spinal cord during pregnancy. If you’re deficient, especially in the first few weeks of pregnancy, it might lead to a serious birth defect called a neural tube defect (NTD) like spina bifida and anencephaly.

Folate or Folic Acid Test

Testing the folate level, which is also known as folic acid and vitamin B9, is primarily used in the diagnosis of anaemia. Symptoms like weakness, tiredness, pale skin, tingling or itching sensations, eye twitching, memory loss, are related to folate deficiency.

What is folic acid?

Folic Acid and Folate are a form of Vitamin B – 9. Both Folate and Folic acid are water soluble and the only difference is that Folate is found naturally in our food while folic acid is man made. The natural sources of Folate are green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, peas, dairy products, poultry, meat, seafood, grains, etc. Folic acid is widely available as supplements.

What is folic acid deficiency?

Folic acid deficiency refers to two things: either extra demand of a folic acid like with pregnant women or losing folic acid because of Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, alcoholism, use of diuretics, etc.

When do you need a folic acid test?

The Folic acid blood test is mainly given to individuals who show symptoms of folic acid or Vitamin–B deficiency. The folic acid blood test is also given to monitoring the progress of varied disease treatment or the lack of it. For pregnant women to prevent birth defects and for the normal development of the foetus, they need to have folic acid test.

Folic acid test interpretation

The reading of the folic acid blood test is done in terms of high and low. Higher than normal folic acid range does not cause any such problems as it is water-soluble and is passed out through the urine, but it signifies the deficiency of Vitamin B deficiency.

Vitamin B deficiency is needed by the body for the proper use of folic acid, and low vitamin B levels mean that the folic acid is not being properly used. Lower than normal folic acid levels could show the following condition;

  • Anemia
  • Folic acid deficiency
  • Poor absorption of vitamins and minerals.
