Prothrombin Time Test
Prothrombin time test (PT), also known as Pro Time Test, is a blood test that measures how long it takes for blood to clot. Often used for identifying bleeding problems, it is also used to check if medicines (mostly Warfarin) that prevent blood clots are effectively working. A PT test is referred to as an INR Test, where INR stands for International Normalized Ratio and is a method of standardizing the results of the Prothrombin Test, irrespective of the testing method.
This can be done using the INR System and enables the doctor to analyze reports from different labs. Prothrombin Test is important as it checks for five different blood clotting factors (factors I, II, V, VII, and X). Prothrombin or Factor II is made by the liver aided by a sufficient amount of Vitamin K. A doctor suggests a PT Test for symptoms such as excessive bleeding, bleeding gums, blood in urine or stool, heavy periods for women, bone marrow and liver problems, Vitamin K deficiency and leukemia.
What is the use of the prothrombin time test?
Once the results arrive from the research laboratories, as aforementioned, it will specify the time taken for your blood to clot. The average blood clotting time is 10-14 seconds. A higher number shows.
- an abnormal amount of Vitamin K in your body
- malfunctioning of the liver
- blood clotting disorder
- ineffective functioning of warfarin
- A lower shows fast blood clotting, which could be because of supplements or foods rich in Vitamin K
What prothrombin time test do?
When you get a cut and your blood vessel ruptures, blood platelets collect at the site of the wound. They create a temporary plug to stop the bleeding. In order to produce a strong blood clot, a series of 12 plasma proteins, or coagulation “factors,” act together to make a substance called fibrin, which seals the wound.
A bleeding disorder known as hemophilia could cause your body to create certain coagulation factors incorrectly, or not at all. Some medications, liver disease, or vitamin K deficiency may also cause abnormal clot formation.
What is a partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test?
A partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test is a blood test that helps doctors assess your body’s ability to form blood clots.
Bleeding triggers a series of reactions known as the coagulation cascade. Coagulation is the process your body uses to stop bleeding. Cells called platelets create a plug to cover the damaged tissue. Then your body’s clotting factors interact to form a blood clot. Low levels of clotting factors can prevent a clot from forming. A deficiency in clotting factors can lead to symptoms such as excessive bleeding, persistent nosebleeds, and easy bruising.
Why do I need an APTT test?
Your doctor may order a PTT test to investigate the cause of prolonged or excessive bleeding.
