Life Expectancy

Last updated on October 20th, 2022 at 07:55 am

Life expectancy is rising globally. People born in 2016 will, on average, live seven years longer than those born 25 years ago.

Enter your information in our life expectancy calculator to find the life expectancy for people of your age, country and gender, as well as the proportion of your life you can, on average, expect to be healthy.

Why does life expectancy change based on your age?

Life expectancy is the number of years on average a person is expected to live based on their age, gender, and country. We calculate life expectancy by using a country’s mortality rates across age groups.

Life expectancy may vary for people of different ages because it is calculated as the number of years a person is expected to live, given they have already reached a certain age.

For example, a girl born in 2016 in Pune is expected to live to age 79. However, the life expectancy of a 65-year-old woman in Pune in 2016 is 84. Her life expectancy is higher because she has already reached 65 and is, therefore, more likely to live another 20 years.

How does the life expectancy calculator work?

The data behind the calculator is from the National Statistics UK. The values for life expectancy in the calculator are rounded to the nearest year after adding the age input to the remaining life expectancy for the relevant age group. In most cases, age groups span five years, for example, from ages 10 to 14.

‘How much of your remaining life will be healthy‘ is calculated from the number of years a person can expect to live in good health, considering disability. This is displayed as a percentage of their remaining life expectancy.

Results assume that rates of death and disability remain constant over the rest of a person’s life, so do not account for any expected scientific advances and improvements in medical treatments.

How do you calculate life expectancy?

When we can track a group of people born in a particular year, many decades ago, and observe the exact date on which each one of them died then we can calculate this cohort’s life expectancy by simply calculating the average of the ages of all members when they died.

What is the average age of death in 2020?

Life expectancy at birth for males was 75.1 years in the first half of 2020, representing a decline of 1.2 years from 76.3 years in 2019. For females, life expectancy declined to 80.5 years, decreasing to 0.9 years from 81.4 years in 2019.

How long will a 75-year-old man live?

There’s good news for men in their quest for longevity. Though women still live longer in most countries of the world, the mortality gap, or difference in life expectancy, is closing. In North America, a man can expect to live between 75 and 78 years of age, depending on where he lives.
