What is the IL-6 test (Interleukin-6 Test)?
IL 6 Test – The Interleukin test 6 or (IL-6) test is used to help evaluate a person with a condition associated with infection or inflammation such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, COVID-19, etc. Interleukin acts as both a pro-inflammatory cytokine and an anti-inflammatory myokine. IL-6 can be elevated with inflammation, infection, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and some leukemias.
It can also assist in early detection of respiratory failure, ie. identifying severe inflammatory response in patients to aid in determining the risk of intubation with mechanical ventilation. This is especially true with COVID-19, infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 2019 coronavirus.
What is the role of IL6 test in treatment?
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has important roles in both innate and adaptive immunity. IL-6 can be produced by a variety of different cell types, including macrophages, endothelial cells, and T cells. This production can be started in response to microbial invasion or other cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF).
As part of the innate immune system, IL-6 acts on hepatocytes to induce expression of C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, and serum amyloid A, also known as the acute phase response. Within the adaptive immune response, IL-6 plays a key role in activing antibody producing B cells to proliferate, leading to an enhanced antibody response.
Diseased associated with IL-6 level
Elevated IL-6 levels have been reported to be associated with a variety of diseases, including autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and Castleman’s disease, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and malignancies such as plasmacytomas, myelomas , lymphomas and leukemias, and ovarian cancers.
Elevated levels are also observed in a variety of inflammatory processes, including infections and collagen vascular diseases. Elevations in IL-6 also appear to be associated with more localized infections, such as prosthetic joint infections (PJI).
IL-6 is also elevated in many chronic inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is evidence that IL-6 is involved in the pathogenesis of certain chronic inflammatory disorders.
