Description

HIV RNA PCR Test

HIV RNA PCR test is a qualitative test which is used as an aid in the management of patients infected with HIV 1. It is to be noted that HIV RNA PCR test is not used in the initial stages of diagnosis or even for confirmation of HIV 1 infection, rather it is used to understand patient prognosis and monitor the effects of anti- retroviral drug therapy.

PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction. HIV RNA PCR test looks directly for HIV in the blood. It has the shortest potential window period and can be used from 3 days to 4 weeks after exposure. After infection, viral load is usually very high within the first four weeks, and so HIV RNA PCR test can confirm a suspected early infection if someone has symptoms.

The most common test for HIV Tests are Antibody/Antigen tests but the accuracy of these tests are less than PCR Tests. HIV RNA PCR Test might be expensive than antibody/antigen tests but is 99% accurate.

HIV RNA PCR Test Includes
  • HIV RNA RT PCR Qualitative Test

HIV is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It can also be spread by contact with infected blood or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Without medication, it may take years before HIV weakens your immune system to where you have AIDS.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) targets the immune system and weakens people’s defence against many infections and some types of cancer. As the virus destroys and impairs the function of immune cells, infected individuals gradually become immunodeficient. CD4 cell count typically measures immune function.
