HIV Elisa Test

Elisa test for HIV

HIV ELISA test is performed on a sample of blood to measure the level of HIV-1 Antibodies and HIV 2 Antibodies in the blood. It is performed to confirm HIV Infection and also during the treatment and after the treatment of HIV Infection.

Why did the HIV ELISA test advise?

Enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) is a type of test that is used to detect antibodies or infectious agents in a blood sample. The test is often performed to see if the person is exposed to viruses or other substances that may cause infection. ELISA is most commonly used to diagnose chronic infections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

What is an ELISA test?

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, also called ELISA or EIA, is a test that detects and measures antibodies in your blood. This test can determine if you have antibodies related to certain infectious conditions. Antibodies are proteins that your body produces in response to harmful substances called antigens.

HIV Elisa test is done for many reasons

  • In the high-risk group (commercial sex workers, injection drug users, and their sexual partners, etc.), to prevent the spread of HIV infection
  • To screen people with long-standing or recurring infections
  • To screen for current or past infections
  • Pregnant women, as a preventive measure from passing the HIV virus to the baby
  • To screen blood, blood products, and organ donors to prevent the spread of HIV infection

Is HIV testing necessary for pregnant women?

HIV testing is critically important for pregnant women. HIV testing is recommended at the beginning of each pregnancy during prenatal care. If any HIV risk factors are present or there is a high incidence of HIV in the population, testing should be repeated in the third trimester. There have been enormous advances in the treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women.

With proper management, the probability of transmitting the virus to the fetus is less than 2%. Without proper management, the risk of transmission is as high as 33%. Because undiagnosed HIV is so common, it is necessary to test all pregnant women. It is strongly recommended that all children born to women with HIV also be tested.
