What is the HIV combo test?

This HIV combo test helps detect anti-HIV 1 and anti-HIV-2 total immunoglobulins plus HIV-1 p24 antigen. The advantage of testing for p24 is that this indicator of HIV infection can be detected earlier than with tests that only looked for HIV antibodies. This HIV DUO test, including p24 antigen, is considered 99.8 percent accurate in 28 days. However, this accuracy increases to 99.9 percent at 90 days after potential contact.

What are the HIV types?

HIV 1

It is the common type of HIV found among people across the world. Mostly 95% of people are affected with Type 1. HIV 1 virus destroys the CD4 cells which results in damaging your immune system. These cells fight infections in your body. Hence, you are left with a weak immune system that may cause gained Immune Deficiency Syndrome in an advanced stage.

HIV 2

It is rarely found in people as the growth of this virus is very slow and takes more time to be transmitted to a person. HIV 2 is a rare type of virus that is rarely found in Indian people. Most affected lot belongs to West Africa.

What are the various stages of HIV infection?

HIV symptoms occur through 3 stages over a period.

First Stage is referred as Acute HIV infection. In this stage, the patients are not aware of being infected with HIV in the initial stage. And the symptoms are to that of flu infection, such as:

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Aching muscles
  • Fever
  • Red rash on skin (torso)

Second Stage is referred as Chronic HIV infection. Once your immune system has been infected with HIV, the flu symptoms will fade away. Hence, doctors call this stage as asymptomatic or clinical latent period. During this stage, the infected person has the potential to pass the virus to another person. Also, this stage last for 10 years in a person.

Third Stage is referred as AIDS. This is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. This stage even shows visible symptoms:

  • Swollen lymph nodes (neck and groin)
  • Night sweats
  • Feeling of tiredness all the time
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Fever lasts beyond 10 days
  • Shortness of breath
  • Yeast infection (mouth, throat, vagina)
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Unexplained bleeding

How HIV transmitted?

The disease is transmitted from one person to another through modes of blood transfusion, anal or vaginal sex, usage of contaminated needles, drug injection, childbirth, from mother to infant during pregnancy, piercing and tattooing .

Why HIV combo test is important?

Screening of the HIV test is the only way to find out if a person is infected with the HIV virus. The reason behind the screening of HIV test if in doubt as the symptoms show up very late in a person’s body. It can take years for the symptoms to appear in most of the cases.
