CA 19.9 Test
CA 19.9 is a marker circulating in the blood of patients who have been diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. It is an antigen secreted by pancreatic cells that has been affected by malignancy. This test helps in determining the levels of the marker and thus the intensity of cancer. CA 19.9 test is mostly required for patients having pancreatic cancer.
What is the CA 19.9 test?
Carbohydrate Antigen 19–9 (CA 19 – 9) is that one changed and modulated Lewis blood group antigen. Patients with gastrointestinal malignancies like pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, or cholangiocarcinoma might suffer from elevated levels of CA 19–9.
The concentrations of CA 19–9 are observed in an escalated nature in cases of benign conditions like cholestasis, cirrhosis, and pancreatitis. The only exception here is that the levels are mostly below 1,000 U/ml.
Lewis’s negative individuals do/ can not express CA 19–9. This is because of the lack of an enzyme called fucosyltransferase that is a key component that influences the production of CA 19–9. Low levels of CA 19–9 do not potentially help in detecting cancerous cells. As a result, cancer detection in such individuals is difficult.
When CA 19.9 test advised?
Following health conditions are indications that CA 19.9 test is required:
- Pancreatic cancer
- Liver cancer
- Cancer of gallbladder
Apart from these health conditions, the below mentioned symptoms also are indications of a CA 19.9 test. Individually, they do not point to any deep-lying pathology. However, when considered together, they point towards malignancy.
- Chronic digestive troubles
- Weight loss
- Changes in appetite
- Passing blood in vomit and stool
- Blackish stool
CA 19.9 is not only a diagnostic test but is also useful during the follow up of cancer patients. Test results provide an idea about the intensity of cancer. Other diagnostic tests like MRI scan, CT scan, USG, tumor marker test, maybe advised along with CA 19.9 test.
CA 19.9 is also advised sometimes to patients who have recovered completely from cancer but show signs of relapse. A test is a useful tool for diagnosing primary cancer and a malignancy that has recurred.
Need for CA 19.9 test
The test is an effective way of detecting and showing pancreatic cancer. Thus, it gives methods to diagnose pancreatic cancer. It differentiates patients suffering from a combination of cholangiocarcinoma and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) from patients who suffer from primary sclerosing cholangitis alone.
