Description

Anti-streptolysin O Test (ASO Test)

ASO (Anti-streptolysin O) is a blood test used to detect or measure the level of antibodies to streptolysin O, a toxin produced by certain strains of the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus). ASO test is often used to help diagnose a current or recent streptococcal infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever, and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions. The test is usually ordered in conjunction with other tests, such as a rapid strep test or a culture of the bacteria, to confirm the diagnosis.

To Whom the ASO Blood Test Recommended?

The ASO (anti-streptolysin O) blood test is typically recommended for individuals who have symptoms of a streptococcal infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever. It may also be ordered for individuals who have been in close contact with someone who has a streptococcal infection. Additionally, the test may be ordered periodically for individuals who are at risk of recurrent streptococcal infections, such as those with rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

How to Prepare for the ASO Blood Test?

There is usually no special preparation required for an ASO blood test. However, it is important to inform your doctor of any medications you are currently taking, as certain medications can affect test results. Additionally, you should inform your lab manager if you have recently had any other blood tests or vaccinations, as these can also affect test results.

You should also let your lab manager and doctor know if you have any allergies or have had any complications with previous blood draws.

You can have the test done in any lab, and it is a simple blood draw from a vein, usually from the arm. You can eat, drink and take medications as normal before the test.

ASO Blood Test Conditions

An ASO blood test measures the level of anti-streptolysin O (ASO) antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to a streptococcal infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.

An elevated ASO level may indicate a current or recent streptococcal infection. However, it is important to note that an elevated ASO level can also occur due to other conditions, such as rheumatic fever, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, or other infections caused by streptococcal bacteria.

It is also important to note that a normal ASO level does not necessarily rule out a streptococcal infection. Other tests, such as a rapid strep test or a culture, may be needed to confirm or rule out the presence of a streptococcal infection.

The ASO test is used in combination with other blood test and clinical presentation to diagnose and monitor post streptococcal conditions like rheumatic fever and nephritis.
