Description

Amylase Blood Test

Amylase test is used to help diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis. It is also used to diagnose and monitor chronic pancreatitis and other disorders that may involve the pancreas.

What is the amylase test?

Amylase is a carbohydrate digesting enzyme produced by the pancreatic cells and salivary glands. It is normally present in blood or urine in minimal amounts. An increased level of amylase in the blood most often signifies pancreatic disorders ranging from acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, blockage of the pancreatic duct by gallstones, or pancreatic tumors.

Very low levels, however, may show permanent damage to the amylase secreting cells of the pancreas. It may also signify kidney disease or toxaemia in pregnancy. Amylase enzyme levels may be in peritoneal fluid in cases of acute pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, or intestinal infection. The amylase test is done with venous blood or urine testing and is required no preparation before undergoing the test.

When serum amylase test advised?

  • A patient would require an amylase test when he has symptoms of pancreatic inflammation which include severe abdominal pain which often radiates to the back with associated symptoms of fever, nausea, and loss of appetite.
  • For monitoring the effectiveness of treatment in a patient with chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic tumors.
  • It is requested in patients with ascites to test for peritoneal fluid amylase to rule out acute pancreatitis.
  • Chronic alcoholics with symptoms suggestive of pancreatitis
  • Patients with cystic fibrosis who have symptoms of pancreatitis,

Is amylase the only enzyme test to detect pancreatitis?
No. in acute pancreatitis, another enzyme which is more accurate in making the diagnosis is the lipase test, so both tests are usually ordered in patients with suspected pancreatitis

Do elevated amylase levels always suggest a pancreatic disorder?
No, other conditions that cause an increase in amylase levels are gall bladder disorders, acute appendicitis, ketoacidosis, perforated ulcer, lung cancer, tubal pregnancy, ovarian cancers, mumps, etc. however, amylase testing is not usually requested in these conditions.

Can medications an individual is taking effect on the amylase levels?
Yes, some medications have increased amylase levels, drugs such as oral contraceptive pills, aspirin, diuretics, corticosteroids, opiates like morphine and codeine, indomethacin.

An increased Serum amylase level shows pancreatic injury in most cases. It may also mean an attack of Acute Pancreatitis if other symptoms are present and based on clinical correlation. Pancreatitis can be triggered by many substances that are consumed, most commonly alcohol, and others include medications.

If you suffer from abdominal pain, this could be a sign of pancreatitis if Amylase is high and may require hospitalization to correct the imbalance and help with pain killers. Consult a doctor/Physician even if you do not have symptoms if the amylase is elevated so that any other conditions may be detected and prevented.
